Amalgam fillings typically comprise 50% pure elemental mercury, 35% silver, 13% tin, 2% copper, and a trace of zinc. The metal powders react with liquid mercury to produce an amalgam (or alloy)22 that provides a flexible material that can be easily packed and shaped. The ADA prefers the use of amalgam because fillings are inexpensive and durable, other composite materials are more expensive and more difficult to fit. Because of its flexibility, the use of amalgam arguably requires les time, skil

Researchers at the University of Rochester School of Medicine recently published a review of what is currently known about mercury toxicity. Among the highlights:
Mercury vapour, methyl mercury and ethyl mercury all target the central nervous system and mercury vapour and ethyl mercury also target the kidneys. Inorganic (metallic) mercury primarily targets the kidneys and stomach. Clarkson, Thomas W., et al.New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 349, October 30, 2003, pp. 1731-37

A very interesting article was published (11th Dec 2005) in the Chicago Tribune by Julie Deardorff. Apparently, as far back as 1845, the American Academy of Dental Surgeons asked it's members to sign a pledge not to use amalgam fillings. The article that was linked to has been removed, so I include a new link to Julie Deardorff's Health Club.

In 2001, The United States National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey of 31,000 Adult Americans, NHANES lll, covering 1998-94 was published by The National Center For Health Statistics [NCHS] It is statistically valid for all 180,000,000 adult Americans. The survey found: That the # of dental fillings was significantly correlated to incidences of cancer, thyroid conditions, mental conditions, diseases of the nervous system including MS, disorders of the eye & respitory systems.

*Risk of impairment in kidney function*Risk of impairment in the immune system. Risk of impairment in foetal development, esp development of the nervous system.
"With reference to the fact that mercury is a multipotent toxin with effects on several levels of the biochemical dynamics of the cell, amalgam must be considered to be an unsuitable material for dental restoration. This is especially true since fully adequate and less toxic alternatives are available.'

In 2002,Prof Emeritus of Enviromental Medicine & Chair of The World Health Organization Task Group on Enviromental Health Criteria for inorganic mecury published a report. 'Mecury is a multipotent cytotoxin that intervenes in the primary processes of the cell. This creates scope for a broad spectrum of possible side effects. The analysis performed in 1997 identified the following health risks from mercury in dental fillings*Risk of impairment in the functions of the central nervous system...

@TheOwlDaddy No, sir he did not. You seem to have Very Strong Emotions behind amalgum fillings for some reason.
If in doubt ask for the clinical safety and toxicity data. It does not exist. Fact is that the mercury is still there, in the amalgam. By your own admission " powders react with liquid mercury " . This should not even be a contentious issue, at the very least we have a smoking gun, why take the risk. The removal of amalgam must be undertaken by a trained dental practitioner, or you might aggravate the the situation. Refer Univ. of Calgary brain neuron degeneration research.
