I know it sounds trite, but maybe if he'd stuck around a bit longer and heard some of the alternative music of the early 90s maybe he wouldn't have been so depressed?
I know that I'm not considering all the personal shit he must have been going through, but, seeing as though music was such an important part of his life, and how I believe there is a significant link in my eyes between the music of the 60s and the 90s, maybe it might have affected him just enough for him to consider treatment:(
