They say that Senator McCain's strong suit is the town hall debate. If this was, in fact, Senator McCain's strength, he might as well go home. Sorry... homes.

While not as smirky as the first debate, Senator McCain was jittery, reptilian (the darting tongue), scattered and overall just plain creepy. At no time was this more obvious than when he referred to Senator Obama as "that one," calling to mind some of the not-so-subtle race baiting that has been the spasmodic, desperate tactic du jour for McCain and his airheaded coward of a running mate.

Meanwhile, as Senator Obama spoke, Senator McCain appeared to wander aimlessly around the stage -- lurking in the shadows like a hissing "gangrel creature with an ill-favored look" -- Gollum with a mic.

At one point, an African American woman was asking him about green jobs and he turned his back on her -- skulking off towards his podium presumably to pop another Ativan or whatever made him sleepily whisper many of his answers. This disrespectful gesture was on the heels of McCain correcting an African American audience member on "bailout" versus "rescue," and foreshadowed McCain's flat out refusal to shake Senator Obama's hand.

Senator Obama, meanwhile, was sharp, cool and presidential. And he hit McCain hard on foreign policy -- among other things, questioning McCain's judgment on Iraq after McCain dropped his "Obama doesn't understand" line. Senator Obama also let fly on McCain's inability to "speak softly" on "bomb, bomb Iran" and "next stop Baghdad." But where Senator Obama succeeded tonight beyond the undisputed accomplishment of his first debate performance was that he seemed to speak directly to you and me tonight. He spoke to our concerns about the economy. This is probably why, on half a dozen answers, the hypnotic CNN dial lines spiked off the charts.

Certainly, at some level, John McCain must be disgusted with himself for using the tactics perfected by the same crowd that used these tactics to derail him in 2000. Hes now curmudgeonly, even hostile, toward the press — the group he used to spend hours with every day and jokingly describe as his base.

He unleashed Sarah Palin to slime their opponent and suggested that the Democrat with the foreign-sounding name who came from the Harvard Yard boutique is not on the American side.

Campaigning last weekend, Palin cast their Democratic rival as someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that hes palling around with terrorists who would target their own country.

The woman is sounding more Cheney than Cheney. Palin said that Obamas relationship with the former Weatherman William Ayers proved that he did not have the truthfulness and judgment to be president. Asked by William Kristol if the Rev. Jeremiah Wright should be an issue, she said, I dont know why that association isnt discussed more.

Atwater gleefully tried to paint Willie Horton as Dukakiss running mate. With a black man running, its even easier for Atwaters disciple running McCains campaign to warn that white Americans should not open the door to the dangerous Other, or That One, as McCain referred to Obama in Tuesday nights debate. (A cross between The One and That Woman.)

On Monday, McCain made Obama, who has been campaigning for almost two years now, sound like an ominous intruder, questioning his character and motives, telling a New Mexico crowd that even at this late hour in the campaign, there are essential things we dont know about Senator Obama ...

McCain aides have been blunt in their need to change the subject from the economy. But, as with Bush Seniors re-election campaign, slithery character attacks dont scare as well when Americans are already scared about keeping their jobs and retirement savings. Maybe thats why McCain didnt bring up Ayers or Wright during the debate, instead leaving it to Sarah Barracuda.

  • Fun to go back and watch these old videos. I didn't see Obama trying to NOT lead the attack on Libya.... why again?? What does Libya have to do with us besides Qaddafi being a complete douche. Well, Kim Jong is also a complete douche... let's go get them too while we are at it and leave our nation completely defenseless. Sure Russia and China or Iran would absolutely salivate over that.

  • @snarksterkid you think ben bernanke is smart? you think hilary clinton is smart? you think timothy geithner is smart? you think rahm emanuel is smart? you think that joe biden is smart? you must be fucking crazy.

some of them may be well educated, but that doesnt mean that they are smart. it only means that they are really good at regurgitating lies.

  • Hey jackass, look how much of an idiot Obama made of himself now? He. hasn't. done. shit. One big joke who acts like a Hollywood celebrity not a leader. You think Obama has done ANYTHING and let me know. Liberal/democrats are a joke. You believe so firmly he will fix th ings, all he can do is present as a glib speaker and trick dumbasses like yourself. Obama is the scam of the century and people like you think he's a political genious! Do me a favor and do something helpful to society

  • Thank you sir! Know I know somebody is actually thinking!

  • Muppet, can you say 'DoH!' ?

  • And now, 6 months later after your comment, he is trying to take away your guns, trying to take away your 5th amendment, trying to take away your rights. 6 months later do YOU STILL believe his LIES of 'change' when the 'change' is DESTORYING the USA way of life and has not changed anything but made it all WORSE?

I am NOT from the USA and have no family ties there etc. It is a TOTAL disgrace against freedom and horrifying what is now happening in the USA-a once 'FREE' country for all US people!

  • If Bush was a failure, then how could doing the same thing (McCain) help?

  • so wut if McCain is not that great a speaker. u dont vote on who is the better speaker and thats wut a lot of ppl do

  • eheidi7 - 1st off if you support McCain and can't spell his name right, then please stop posting comments. It makes you and your republican party look like idiots.

Well I guess you can say the same for McCain's supporters. Calling Obama the N word, a terrorist and talks of demanding his assasination.

    Obama/Biden 08
