  • Turns out one of the power packs went bad. Replaced both to be on the safe side and it was good as new. I forgot this was on here, otherwise i would have posted sooner

  • I know this thread is old but I'd bet the air hole on the gas cap is plugged or the filter screen on the fuel line is clogged and restricting flow.

  • @markljesse Had a lot of trouble wit a 55 hp from 77

Works good now with new 0,044" wiseco pistons, stator, timing stuff, powerpack, ignition coils, biger and newer model of carbs and other orifice plugs.. So could be worse :P

  • fuel problem is the oil mix ratio ok 50 parts petrol to one part oil.check your filters and tank vent and fuel primer bulb to see if its contracting under load also you might be hitting the rev limeter and redlining the engine

  • my johnson 235 does the same thing even after new pistons, reeds, crank, heads, coils, power packs, impeller, carbs and compleat fuel system, just waiting on stater, pick up coil and rectifier. After that every part will have bin changed and if it still dont work its time for a new moter hahaha fuck me

  • Fuel filter!

  • Not all the cylinders are opening

  • powerpack

  • It is hard to hear what is going on very clearly....Could be either fuel or ignition related....Start with simple things first! New ignition components are very expensive so don't just buy new parts on a "guess"....

Start with checking the basics such as fuel filter, fuel contamination with water, etc...There are four fixed high speed jets, one could be getting plugged with debris intermittently....

Ignition problems can be confirmed using a timing light or inline neon spark tester.

  • I had a similar performance on an 87 , 50 hp. I kept chasing a suspected fuel, power p., coil, wires for several season, until I discoverd that Johnson has an auto shutdown when a motor starts to overheat. Duh..and advisors never brought it up.

This older model may not have it built in,, it also may not have an alarm, if it does check it out to see if the alarm is still functioning.....the auto shut down is referred to S.L.O.W......for what its worth......................
