This is not a substitute for a sign class, only to show the signs and to provide extra resources for people out there in learning ISL (Irish Sign Language). I would heartily recommend you attend a sign class, if at all possible.

Learn how to count in ISL!

Numbers... Just follow the system and you'll be ok.

Here is another tip for you...

The hand you sign with...It remains the same if you go down the columns. Example:

2, 7, 12, 27, the active hand is the same.

3, 8, 13, 18, the active hand is the same.

4, 9, 14, 19, the active hand is the same.

It is different with 1.

6, 11 and 16, the active hand is the same.

It is different with 15 and 20.

5, 10, the active hand is the same.

  • Can the numbers 0 through 9 be done in ISL on one hand? I'm trying to solve a puzzle and it consists of a list of single-handed signs. The signs I have are definitely digits and they're not British Sign or American. I've Googled and can find nothing! Thanks.

  • @CottonBudda Hi there. Gambian Sign language uses the one hand for numbers 0 through 9. A lot of influence is from Dutch Sign Language.

In ISL, yes, it is possible, but the true signs require 6 to 10 to be signed with two hands in ISL. We can sign 6 to 10 with the one hand, but it is an adaptation for people who may need to hold things in the other hand, like a pen, phone or pint glass.

  • Good job!! Wonderful and so clear.

  • @mysticvean Thanks. I found what I needed in American sign language. I've been told by a sign language teacher that sign languages have dialects same as spoken ones, and the one-handed thing might be like that. Thanks again.

  • @Elat100 Hi there Elat. I'll have to finish the subtitles here, as the tip is, after 20, just sign the numbers as they look. for instance 24. Instead of thinking in English and signing twenty and then four (you're actually signing 20-4.) Sign 2 then 4. that makes 24. I'll get cracking on the subtitles. Cheers.

  • Have watched this vid for about 20 mins each night for the past 3 nights...... today, one of the guys I work with in school , who is deaf was amazed that I was able to count using ISL.

thanks a mil, really appreciate it!
