Phones DO actually cause cancer. Interesting side note: retroviruses make up a large portion of our genomes. Our non-coding DNA is littered with remnants of retroviruses, and new research is even showing activity in these regions as well.

I should clarify. The mutation rate depends directly upon the hosts replicating enzymes, since viruses hijack the host enzymes to replicate. Replication is were mutation occurs. The rate is "high" because of the generation times of viruses, not because of anything special.
