for 24 hours. Another vet will sedate the dog for hip x-rays and then send the x-rays to the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals). The will rate the hips so that the breeder can find the best mate for the dog. There is no test for cancer, but a responsible breeder knows the history of EVERY dog in the lines at LEAST 3 generations back and will not breed if there is a history of cancer..
Make no mistake - these are VITAL steps and anyone not taking them, is being VERY irresponsible.

You can lower the possibility of getting a dog with cancer by going to a responsible breeder. Responsible breeders health test their dogs (this does NOT mean a general checkup at the vet). There are very specific tests that each breed should have. Boxers, for example, are particularly prone to heart problems and hip dysplasia. For this reason, boxers should see a cardiologist and have hip x-rays before being bred. The cardiologist will do an EKG and then place a holter monitor on the dog
