You used to be correct. For many years they only gave you the 10th dan after your death but the Emperor of Japan decided to give Kanazawa his 10th Dan now and noone was going to tell the Emperor he couldn't do that and there are no 9th dan's alive that wanted to make a stink about either. Kanazawa is most definately among the best in the world. Saying that a purple belt does it better is just being ignorant.

SKIF (Shotokan Karate-do International Federation), not ISKF. And the JKA may not recognize Kanazawa's 10th dan (he "received" it after leaving the JKA) but there's no doubt anyone there still sees him as one of the best living karateka. If you think your purple belts do better, either they're awfully good or *you* might need to practice some more.

Which emperor??? Kanazawa obtained his 10th dan from the International Martial Arts Federation. The maximum grade he obtained from the JKA was 7th dan.

jimkel Sensei Kanazawa is a legend even though he broke away from JKA. My favourite though has to be Sensei Enoeda, the tiger!
Shotokan is not only JKA, SKIF is other association of shotokan, very important also.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
There are no 10 degree Shotokan Karateka alive. At least those recognised by the JKA, And the highest is 9th dan. Besides the Purple belts in the USKF do this Kata better.

Hirokazu Kanazawa is the chief instructor of ISKF (International Shotokan Karate Federation), isn't a JKA member.
