Yeah, he meant feet, not yards. Just a verbal typo.
Kody did not jump the gun -- you can't see it with this quality (heck, you can barely see it frame-by-frame on the TV), but he goes when Officer Jackson shifts his stance slightly and looks at Trooper Eder-Linell.
That video was taken just before or right after Kody's 2nd birthday, I believe, and had been out of training for only a couple months. Very much a rookie K9, but impressive nonetheless. That's why he kept giving Kody commands.

You said the dog launches into the air 10 or 15 yds before biting, no way. Maybe 5-6 ft. Dog also jump the gun when you did the pat down. Out was decent but having to always praise the dog while working it is a sign the dog needs more training. Once it's show time the dog knows it's time to work, and reward will come after the fact. Not a bad street dog but as I've seen with many police dogs the training isn't top notch.
