WINK NEWS TONIGHT

This is the entire first block of a WINK 11PM newscast from January 18, 1986. It's easy to date because of the main national story; the landing of Space Shuttle mission STS-61. Rep. Bill Nelson (D-FL) was one of the crew members.

Valorie Williams was anchoring, filling in for Lloyd Sowers (Currently at WTVT 13 Tampa)
This is before WINK installed its Ampex ADO, Harris Iris Still Store and Chyron 4100 EXB.

The Over-The-Shoulder graphics are from 35mm slides. You can see some live graphic changes.
The character generator was a 3M D-8800. You can see it's use also in the Grant Eyeglasses spot.

The station ID was done out-of-house at a graphics company called Computer Image of Denver, Colorado. Their specialty was a computer animation system called a Scanimate.

This was transferred from Betamax to a BlackMagic Design Intensity Pro in a PowerMac G5.
Why this was recorded? I really have no idea.

  • Surprised that Scanimate was still being used as late as 1986.

  • She seemed alittle excited that Lloyd had the night off....

  • I know that 1980's Chyrons, for their credit rolls, had a total of 422 pixels (height) from top to bottom through which rolling credits passed through the screen; I'm wondering if you would know what the exact positions would have been by fields (would a manual have mentioned it?).

  • cool story bro

  • The Space Shuttle Challenger was the spaceship that took off and exploded in mid-air.

  • Valorie was the main anchor/producer for many years of the weekend newscasts. Lloyd joined later.

  • Wasn't this just 10 days before the tragedy that killed several astronaunts?
