Any this pretty much serves to prove your lot literally make thing up. Pray tell, what exactly is this 'rate of gravity' that you refer to? If you refer to the acceleration due to gravity, the answer to your question is quite simply "they didn't." They averaged in at a bit over double the time it would take an object in a vacuum to fall the same distance.

And the appeal to emotion might work if you didn't take quotes WAY out of context.
