This is an example of selective inattention at the level of conscious awareness. This inattentional blindness is a great example of what we are good at: focusing attention on some part of our environment. In one estimate we take in 11 million bits of information per second using our five senses in a second. Of those 11 million bits we only consciously process about 40. No wonder my wife buys a new pair of shoes or gets her hair done and I do not notice.
