When you finally make it overseas, it's important to set physical and emotional boundaries, so to speak, despite your desire to jump right into the new culture. In this video, one missionary talks about setting up house in a way that allows you respite from your new surroundings.

TRANSCRIPT:
How do you set up your home on the mission field?

Its really important that your home is a place that you want to be, that its comfortable and safe. So any time I was on the field, and I got there, I made sure that I brought little things that made it like home, made it personal to me, made it a place that I wanted to be. Oftentimes I got a little place where I knew that I would want to pray, got a place that I knew that I would be able to read my Bible at.

Setting up a place that feels like home, that you want to come back to at the end of a strange day in a strange country, after listening to strange language, is really important.

In personal life its the same thing. It may not be easy to have the same kind of personal or social life that youre used to, but if youre intentional about it, I think that will go a long way.
