Might a thin application of flux before the paste help stop the bridging on the ICs? I know the paste has flux in it but maybe it's helpful when using the el cheapo approach.
I've don't regular soldering of SMT's. but it's nice seeing the solder paste in use. I've read about how to do it but until actually seeing it now, couldn't quite picture what was going on. TNX!
We solved our problem by letting the board sit on the griddle for one minute at around 200F before we ramp up to about 375F. Then we have a fixture made up to cover the board to give it an oven effect bringing the temp up over 400F.
Have you tried setting your griddle to full blast after preheat? Even the cheap ones will melt (leaded) solderpaste. You won't run into the problem of tombstones either!
Downsides - forced reflow of every component.
Upsides- Cheap, and almost error free once you get a hang of how much paste to put on each pad.
VY FB. The HQ version looks good. I take it you're not on a modem anymore, as was the lore. I have derived countless hours of enjoyment from your kits. I look forward to further offerings as time rolls on. Thank you for what you do, Steve. Best of 2009 to all there from all here at chez KC7FYS/7J1AWL

FB Steve. Building an ATS3 was one of the most enjoyable things I've ever done. I actually found SMT soldering quite relaxing.
Thanks for a great kit, and great video.
