This is an Oarfish. I have seen 2 of them in the past year while diving at Santa Cruz Island, Southern California, and had my camera on when I saw this one. They are really cool, and I have heard that they are very rare. The oarfish, which can reach 17m long, has previously only been seen on a few occasions dying at the sea surface, or dead washed ashore. Oarfish (Regalecus glesne) are one of the world's longest fish reaching 17m. Their strange appearance may have provided the basis for the sea serpent myths told by early ocean travellers.
Not only are they elongated, they also have a prominent dorsal fin which gives it an unusual "serpent" appearance.

  • Oh my god, Baby Oarfish. ;A; That's so adorable. You lucky Bastard.

  • @moltentigerclaw yea...

  • For me, this is the only fish for which a sighting is equal to seeing the ocean sunfish, Mola mola. Great that you got to see a small specimen in shallow water. That way you could frame and photograph the entire animal and still be close to shore. I greatly envy your sighting! Good going and thanks for sharing.

  • @Juscz We also saw a school of about 8-10 Sunfish on the same day. I have the video still, i just haven't uploaded it.

  • Dude! It's a baby oarfish! It's hard to believe they start out so small! 1:03 is a great shot!

  • @aLilBitOEverything Hi @aLilBitOEverything, Wow, that's maybe even greater. I put seeing the oarfish on par with the Mola mola. I did see four Mola molas in Bali last September (got very close to and videoed one of them for several minutes). I hope to some day see the oarfish, my other Holy Grail of marine life.

  • they are such amazing creatures

  • @aLilBitOEverything Oh my you got to see a baby Oarfish..that's pretty amazing.

  • @BarneysanchezDHYea, they get massive but they are small when they are babies, and then grow into giants.

  • @aLilBitOEverything Yeah that's what Oarfish do, but Oarfish are massive and can grow to 15-30 feet in length.
