Usually check the dist. cap (removed) with wires attached. If Ohm readings are within Ohms/ft. per plug wire manufaturer, the cap is probably ok.
Sometimes the valves seat themselves into the seat thus increasing lifter preload, and causing premature wear or lifter damage, etc. What is the vacuum at idle ? Times have changed since the shooting of a lame horse.

any mods? I SAW headers! are those flowmaster 40's i hear?

just long tube headers and i think 40 series flowmaster on a stock rebuilt 302. they were put on by the previous owner so i'm not totally sure.

couldn't check it since there isn't a timing reference bolted to the block. peejaa got it right, there was carbon tracking in the cap like i posted in the description.
