Here is another video, not sure if you can see it on youtube or not, but this shows one of the parakeets coming in from a tree to see his buddy playing in the grass.

  • They are safe from just about all predators but unfortunately I did lose my favorite bird to a hawk this year. I should have taken this threat more seriously but not sure what else I could have done and still let them be free? They got him in a tree about 20 yards from the aviary. Unfortunately hawks are protected so not sure how to deal with this problem. I guess freedom isn’t always free. I think he did have a good life though.

  • @rimfire22yahoo Just get a big enough outdoor aviary. The whole point of an aviary is too let them be outside without them getting away from you. If you want them to "fly free" you might as well just let them out and leave out a food bowl since that's pretty much what you're doing.

  • With this setup they are safe from most all animals. They have been flying free and coming back for years. I've had to cut back with letting them outside recently (this past year) due to an unusually large # of hawks. Literally had a half a dozen hawks sitting on top of my aviary! (this is not uncommon now) Usually I'm lucky to see one a day just driving around to different places, but they have attracted a flock of them daily. It is spring and I have not let any out all. (plugged the hole).

  • Hi, I was wondering if you could give me the measures of the aviary, im going to build one for my cockatiels and i really love yours.

  • Aprox. measurements 9 foot wide, 6 foot long the braces are about a yard apart. Chicken wire is around all sides including the base. (don't want animals to dig into it) The ground is dug out about a foot deep below the grass, with some gravel in the bottom. I add a little gravel every year. I used metal joints at all connection points. Need to have at least part or all of the roof covered to avoid too much sun.

  • I've been gone for most of the summer so i haven't been around to post more videos. But yes the are all still here. They have been flying around for a few years now. Hopefully i will get some more better videos up soon. They usually come out in the morning. One time i had 4 hawks sitting on top of the aviary. I eventually found that if you put a rubber ducky on top it seems to keep hawks away as i haven't seen any since then.

  • @rimfire22yahoo he must have had a great life. think, theyve got the protection of the aviary at night, they dont have to worry about food or anything else (apart from hawks) and budgies havent alwas been human pets so id imagine they can keep safe from pedators most of the time

  • WOW , that is a blessing for them, I had 3 keets and gave away one, I have ahuge cage for him and spoil him, but you took the cake on this, Im so happy for ur keets, bless them...Ray form NYC...

  • @rimfire22yahoo The hawks are there because they know there's free, easy food. A hole in the wire can be made bigger by any number of predators, and snakes can slip in easily. So no, they're not safe.

Also, chicken wire is poisonous to parrots.

  • aaaaaaah! Keet gone estray! I hope you were able to capture the stray feathered friend.

  • Thats awesome! I would love to have some tame enough to let outside, and not have to worry about them finding their way back. :)
