Oh yeah you're bang on about dedication and yeah im just impressed that they managed to drum up such obviously keen volunteers to carry on an ill forgotten (almost) fantastic, naval tradition! Ah i bet there was! I hope they bring it back how it was soon, the new tournament isnt a patch on the old Royal. And its almost exclusively army :L wheres the fun in that?
@IRememberTheOldDays That is a very fair point. They are only using half size, and although they are still heavy, they are nothing compared to the real thing. I may have over emphasized alot of work, but the fact that the portsmouth field gun team took a year to train to get to earls court shows that you need dedication. And don't get me wrong, anyone in the navy clearly has dedication, but just remembering how old some of these boys are is quite remarkable. And a great atmisphere that night!!!!
@AuroraPrincessZelda remember, they're using half size replicas here. And RN gunners dont just run for personal or the gun team pride. They run with the pride of the entire Navy, and dare I say it, country. Now that's some serious motivation there! Im sure they worked extremely hard but to say that the RN would need " A LOT " of training is a tad ambitious in my eyes. Great job still, id have loved to be there with them!
@AuroraPrincessZelda Tbh, regardless of how much training, and Im sure they worked their backsides off!, the RN are still crewed by grown men and women, plus they still do the gun run on private lots, so it wouldnt be asking too much to pull it together again. I do feel, however, that Britain is becoming increasingly sea blind. Which is both absurd and a great, great shame
@IRememberTheOldDays I would love to see the navy pull together a team. The fact that these boys are between 14-19 is incredible. Having a family member in the team, i know how hard they work and how strong they must be to do this. therefore I feel that the navy would need A LOT of practice to even match Wellingtons power. However the portsmouth team could give them a run for their money ;)
It should have been the lads from our Royal Navy, not school children. I mean they're hardly comparable in thrills! Saying this, I am glad that they're continuing the tradition in the hearts and minds of the British youth
