Moving charges (i.e. electrical current) create magnetic fields. This video demonstrates this using a battery, a coil of wire, and a compass.

See my other videos in all areas of physics: mechanics, optics, acoustics, thermodynamics in addition to electricity & magnetism. Example problems, demonstrations, derivations --- all at FIZZ:ed!

  • No, feeding it direct current (DC) from the battery will only produce a stationary magnetic field. Alternating current (AC) would create EM waves, as the coil acts as an antenna.

  • Probably not. This magnetic field isn't very strong, and anyway a calculator doesn't have magnetically-operated parts like a disk drive that are susceptible to magnetic fields.

  • And why are you needing protection from plasma?

  • Are you sure your coil has thick enough wire?-)

  • i think he wants to protect himself from an alien attack...now I'm curious as well

  • A single wire will demonstrate the same thing.

  • Interesting....

  • Thanks!

  • LOL. This responds to compass - on the earth's magnetic field - on to magnetic field of a coil!

  • Nice Video That You Share , So Very Nice Thanks You Magnetic Field of a Coil of Wire

  • I Really Like The Video From Your Magnetic Field of a Coil of Wire

  • Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing This video demonstrates this using a battery, a coil of wire, and a compass.

  • Everyone is saying things i dont even understand! Can you it in simple and uunderstandable words plsss wahahha XD
