Gather up the family and set 'em round the table
Then she divy's up the chips after turning on the cable
That's the only way that praying for a full house seems to work on them
Kids growing quick she's not ready for the drama
So she comes dressed to dinner in a full suit of armor
And her husband's in a scuba suit eyeballs deep in gin
Then the roof flies off in a flash tornado
While the baby and bathwater tumble out the window
And a fellow in a cabuchon hat, well he don't knock, no,
he just waltzes in singing
Who turned out the lights?
In the beat of a heart which of course in that era
Was a carbon nanotube glued to an antenna
Well the temperature took a terrible twisting turn
And momma didn't wanna but the kids went and made her
So she took all the books out of the refrigerator
An they threw 'em in the fireplace waiting for the ages to burn
Then the lady on the radio was singing bout religion
She was offering a second chance to anybody listening
By clinging to their crosses to best cut their losses cause that's what they had learned
But then a freight train came carrying a courageous cavalry
Seven apostles lost on the way to Galilei
And as they stroked their beards, our fear seemed no concern, they just sang
Who turned out the lights?
Then the wood and the steel pulled the wagon and the wheel
And it brought along a debutante who was offering a deal
And who could blame the fools they were so very young
And the sultry savior she was a son of a bitch
She would say that she loves you then sleep with your friends
But the bitter tastes better when it's gone and off your tongue
And the population cried from their thoughtless actions
Saying, "We don't regret it, we just wish it didn't happen"
And their teeth bit deep into the bleak and wheezing sun
And it was safe that she knew she had lied
In the same way that fire is a sign of life
And her was apology but she never spoke up
But if she did she'd just sing
Who turned out the lights?
And right about then a canary in a coal mine
Was breathing real low even though he didn't know quite
Whether or not the apocalypse would be soon
The old grew strong as the young grew tired
As the earth caved in and the sky set fire
All the beats smoked jay's blowing o's around the moon
While the moochers and the looters hollered loud and clear
With voices high with anger but thin with fear
They were sincerely going nuts from thinking they were getting screwed
Something in their history had always been a mystery
But noone here would ever know 'cause no one here would ever read
The fiddler breathed the sweetest saddest tune
And then just like that and with the tip of his hat
The trespassing messenger was packing his bags
"I'm going now. My time has come." he said just like Daniel Boone, and he sang
Who turned out the lights?
