@makinstatements - I TOTALLY AGREE with you. I saw the US version in LA with Cleo Laine - I enjoyed that but the London version was how Sondheim wanted it!

This was the first version I heard, it scared me away until I heard the original cast Everyone is so serious and they all look mad/crazy.

It's sad that the internet has become a place where amateur critics come to voice their petty, uninformed opinions. I loved the original London production. Loved Broadway too but London had a darkness and quirkiness that was a lot closer to the European origins of fairy tales. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's "weird, bland, a failure..."
