Randi Weingarten at DNC

Randi Weingarten is the current president of the American Federation of Teachers and was the first LGBT leader of a national union. She was elected in July 2008, following 11 years of service as an AFT vice president.

I recently learned that there are at least two openly LGBT leaders of national unions. Mary Kay Henry is an out lesbian, and an American labor union activist who was elected International President of the Service Employees International Union on May 8, 2010. She is the first openly LGBT person to lead the SEIU.

But let's get back to Randi. In the above video, she is addressing the Tuesday LBT Caucus Meeting at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. Later in the day the DNC became the first mainstream American Political Party to endorse marriage equality.

She's introduced by veteran LGBT rights and Democratic activist Rick Stafford of Minnesota.
