  • I'm his great nephew. I'm a studio musician (piano) and live in Eastern KY right over the hill from where he grew up. My grandfather (Jesse Powell Kazee) was his brother. The oldest of 4.

I knew him pretty well and have spent plenty of time on the front porch of our homeplace and living room playing guitar as he played and sang. He truly was amazing and insightful. Had a great sense of humor. Much of the family is musical. My brother lives in NYC, plays piano for many people.

  • That is a 1923/24 Gibson RB-3 for those who want to know. It has a 10 1/2" head, hollow brass tube on ball bearings without springs and a "trap-door" resonator. The neck has a 24 fret ebony board. I used to have its twin.

  • How about posting the other 2 songs? And the Roscoe Holcomb? Watsons?

    Any chance?

  • So nice to find some footage of these older players, and pretty rare too....

  • @kazeejohn It's so great to see Buell Kazee come to life in this video. I greatly enjoyed his music when I first heard it on the Harry Smith collection (which opened my mind to so many great rare pieces).

  • KZ IN DA HOUSE!

  • great videos and informative blog. keep up the good work.

  • Wish I could have met Buell. He was a classic.

  • What a treasure to have one of the old-time Banjo greats break it down for you. Where on earth is this film from?

  • Great to see Buell Kazee. One of the greatest. That "rake back" is news to me. Looking forward to trying it.

    Thanks for posting.
