When she was like 16 or 18 or something she suffered from a kidney infection, had no medical insurance, and was turned away by the hospital.

She went out to her van, basically just wait it out, and probably risk dying, when a doctor came out, after hearing their pleas for help at the hospital reception, and said he would treat her free of charge.

So jewel wrote "Hands", in good part, as a dedication to that doctor. Can't say im a huge fan of the music, but gotta respect her story, and the doc.

Mentioning god doesnt make it about religion, it just includes religion in the message being sent out. She clearly feels that believing is an aid to being kind and helping others, but that doesnt make it exclusive to religious people. If you dont believe in God then you dont believe, but it doesnt change the message that you ought to be kind to all.
