  • That noise comes from the Sound Suppression Water System, it's the air being displaced and pushed out by the flooding water...creates a whistling noise

  • I was there to see that launch... I was like 9 year old and i can remember it perfectly. You stand a few miles away over this lake and the sky just lit up like it was day time. It also gave off a very dainty heat. It was one of the most beautiful things i've ever seen.

  • I saw the STS-88 launch, and I agree, absolutely SPECTACULAR!

  • I think Eileen proved herself on this mission more than any other astronaut of her time. Short of a few guys like Hoot Gibson or John Young...even Rick Hauck.

  • This shuttle barely made it into orbit with malfunctions and alarms during ascent. The irony is that it was Columbia.

  • I was there for this! I was at the two prior attempts as well. What an awesome experience. It was 12:30 in the morning but it looked like daytime. I was completely in awe.

I'm sad that there are only two launches left :(

  • this was a close call

  • sweet voice..liked it when said...booster ignition and liftoff, so calm, sweet...

  • look the solid rocket booster at 1:53 thats fucking close, i would have abort the mission

  • This was a close call!

main engine electrical short and hydrogen leak

  • they wernt supposed to launch at this time the only reason why they launched is because there was and abort

  • I think STS-51F wins that title.

O-Rings,RSLS abort, abort ATO, almost ditched. Almost lost two engines.

  • Thanks, mianbentley! What about that "humming" sound? At the beginning of the video.

  • Eileen is a fellow orangeman. ...or orange woman.

    Go Syracuse!!
