Giving the canal back to the people whos rightfully owned it was the right thing too do. This was probably the only selfless thing the US has ever done. Panama was a puppet state, forged in a CIA backed revelation in 1903. Good for panama, Good for carter,

But everybody can travel through the Panama canal now can`t they? If Jimmy Carter had been an asshole in that situation, there could have been troubles. He settled it peacefully, and everything has been working well since then!

Only the great people of the United Stated have the courage to do the right thing even when is not for them only! I'M a proud Panamenian, and very honor to say thank you ! thank you for given us a reason to be a nation and a partneer in the Panama Canal! tank you for given us back the canal ,which is the only resource my nation have ! other than the people ! @fraizer57 The Shah was hardly progressive. He was a butcher on the level of Saddam, as our own CIA people have said for ages. He was loved in the west because he kept Iranian money in Rockfeller banks (brokered by the Rockefeller liason Henry Kissinger). Shah killed 19,000 students and workers in the streets in 1978 as they opposed his vicious rule and his notorious, Israeli-trained secret police, the Savaak. Read "Eagle and the Lion" by James Bill and visit Iran to learn why they hate you.

@fraizer57 Hizballah and Hamas have nothing to do with Carter. Hizbollah came about because Reagan and Alexander Haig supported Israel in its terror war against Lebanon, killing 30,000 civilians under the pretense of destroying the PLO. Carter refused to give Israel the green light to this war during his term. Hamas was not created until 1986, long after Carter was gone.

@fraizer57 Ok, Carter didnt "sell Iran"--he like Nixon, Ford, and everyone back to Truman backed the ruthless Shah who killed many innocents in the street with American help. Carter came to his senses too late and the shah fell, not from "anti-USA mullahs", but from an entire population that was sick of U.S.-sponsored dictators. Iranians took American's hostage--mostly CIA personnel who supported Shah--so that the fleeing Shah would be returned for trial.
