Twice a week Art Starts hosts art drop-in workshops for youth in the Maria A Shchuka Library in Toronto coordinated by Program Manager Erin Schachter.
This spring the kids worked with artist Mahlikah Aweri from the Red Slam Collective to learn about Aboriginal culture including smudging, First Nations art, music, and story telling (including some traditional tales) and how these intersect with hip hop culture today. Over the course of the program participants dabbled in graffiti, freestyling, rap composition and performance.
The program worked towards creation of a music video based on our collaborative song Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. The outcome was truly awesome and the kids took great pride in their work.
