The negotiating table is one of the most significant symbols of European cooperation - and EU interpreters make sure that everyone around that table can speak their own language and be fully understood by the other participants. Video prepared for special exhibition "Do you speak European?" at the EU Pavilion, Shanghai Expo 2010 10-20 July. Chinese subtitles.

  • @ML678v No, forked tongue is the language mostly used by the un-elected commission and Playmobil "parliament". Remember when the Irish voted NO to the Lisbon treaty : "The commission respects the Irish no vote, but....."

  • Esperanto as the Comum Language in EU.

  • "The best experts can always be sent to discussions". hahha what a joke. Like the wonderful Cathy Ashton who has never had a proper job in her entire life and never been elected to anything either, yet shes going around telling people about "democracy". What a joke. This video was probably made with the help of Kim Jong Il.

  • @DGInterpretation I would but it needs real time confirmation, eventually if use a number from someone else. x)

  • @unurautare2 - just give them a fake number! :-)

Europe should preserve its rich and DIVERSE culture! For me It's not desireable to abolish the many national languages in favor of one pan european language. But we should promote language lerning. Especially in the UK.

  • There'll never be a lingua franca in Europe untill some real threat or crisis occur and give them the urgence to unite. So no common language could be adopted in foreseealbe future, especially an artificial one.

It's funny that the video was made out of a Chinese documentary. Adopting Chinese could be an option in a far future, along with English.

  • @JAMD456 I do not know if it is due my lack of inter-continental travelling - because I have only travelled in Europe so far - but I never felt like having problems communicating with people. In Berlin I had a conversation with a chef in a restaurant, my boyfriend in has talked in Barcelona with someone as well. In Italy, we could communicate using German ánd English. I live in the Netherlands near the German border, but that doesn't stop me from shopping there. And I do learn a Asian language!

  • @moonslave90 That would work, or creating a useful piece of software that actively translates languages as one is talking, my point was that if one is trying to create a "common" global language, inventing and forcing people to speak it would be a waste of time and resources there would be little hope of people willingly adopting one, over time, as people naturally co-mingle (especially in our modern era, where travel is far easier) one global language will more then likely "evolve" naturally.
