  • just wanna know, what does/is the 'safety shoe' for/do

  • @pilot588 the safety shoe will drop the aerobridge down and set off a warning, so the door doesn't hit the floor.

the bridge is normally automatically leveled with a tiny wheel on the side of the bridge tracking its movement

  • Is it possible to open/close doors without assistance from the outside? And how can that saftey shoe protect the door from damage if the plane drops? The weight is too much.

  • @n40798 , yes most airlines open doors from the inside, Qantas doesn't because it's a premium airline and has extra staff to do that for them.

  • How does the emergency slide attach itself to the floor when its activated?

  • @Tinmaster10 , in the floor are two notches on either side of the door, when you hear , arm doors, this engages the slide into the notches. so if the door is opened without disarming, the slide will pull and inflate

  • LOL, because you never know when you might need to do this.

  • Qantas should teach us how to fly a 747 instead xD!

  • how heavy is the door?

  • Good stuff

  • are u sure it is the ground staff opens the door ?? is it not the purser ,?

  • @n40798 it will make the jetway drop down, until the door is no longer pressing on the safetyshoe. The plane will rarely drop, but it may sink down as the plane is loaded. but as redtail said, there is an other mechanism that tracks the movement of the fuselage, that should rise and lower the jetway, so that the safetyshoe is untouched.

  • @gsully224 It should not be so simple. If it was so simple, we would have more UA 811s than you think. Sometimes people don't close doors properly. This was the reason why UA 811 happened a long with AA 96, THY 981. It is made difficult by purpose.

  • i look forward to working with qantas when i grow up!

  • Why don't they use electrically opening automatic doors? I have a pretty good idea why

  • When you pull the arming leaver down, the slide which is stored in a basin (the large sticking out part of the door on the inside.) The slide is stored in here. When the door closes and the door is set to armed, the slide has like two metal slats which fall and lock into two catches on the sloor. The slide is now locke din place so should you open the door, the slide will inflate. Thats what I remember from cabinc rew training!

  • What about a 747 takeoff procedure?

  • What happened to door nobs? :-)
