my interpretation of this story is that the tree which is selfless and giving always seems to be happy b/c it has a purpose in life, which is to make someone it loves have the best life possible. on the other hand, the boy is greedy, selfish and towards the end of his life grows tired, weary, and dissatisfied with his own life b/c he wasted it solely pursuing his own interests
