One of the finest Heldentenors of all time, Franz Völker (1899-1965) impressively shows how beauty of tone, legato and nuanced phrasing are very well possible when singing the demanding tenor roles of Wagner's musicdramas. Völker was by far the best Lohengrin, Parsifal and Stolzing imaginable while Lauritz Melchior (1890-1973) proved to be the ideal for the heavier Wagner tenor roles such as Siegfried, Tristan and Tannhäuser. Interestingly Völker always kept the Mozart roles such as Tamino in his repertoire and sang them parallel to his Wagnerian engagements. Therefore he ensured that his voice stayed healthy and mannerisms such as the temptation of creating "super-tones" and over-singing did not develop.
The tone production is effortless and beautiful. Wonderful technique.
