A Short-tailed Albatross on Eastern Island, Midway Atoll. This "Golden Gooney" one of about 2200 left in the world (there used to be about 5 million), a highly endangered seabird species, was seen regularly in 2008. Midway used to have a small breeding population of Short-tailed albatross, but the last nest seen on Midway was in 1960. In 2000 the USFWS began using decoys to try and attract these seabirds back to Midway in the hopes that a reestablishment of a breeding colony would be the result. 8 years later there is much promise as 5 individuals were sighted at Midway this season (2008) and many found their way to the decoy plot. Maybe soon we will have a video of a chick on Midway!

  • Have you seen Chris Jordan's pictures of the decaying albatross with the pieces of plastic in their stomaches? It will break your heart.
