Police used tear gas and pepper spray to control crowds in Istanbul and Ankara.

A defiant Erdogan said it was not he, but the protesters themselves who posed a potential threat to democracy, telling supporters in Ankara: "They've been removing paving stones and breaking shop windows. Is this democracy?"

"They say Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a dictator. I have nothing to say if they call the person who has committed himself to serving his nation 'a dictator'," Ergdogan continued.

Clean up efforts began on Sunday June 2 in Ankara and Istanbul after two days of fierce protesting, in which hundreds of people were arrested.
