In 1970, Elvis was nominated for the award by former sherriff (and eventually Memphis Mayor), Bill Morris. Among the other nominees for 1970 were: Ronald Reagan's press secretary, Ron Ziegler; civil rights activist Tom Atkins; biophysicist Mario Cepecchi; and cancer researcher Dr. George Todaro, among others. Despite winning many awards during his career, those that were close to Elvis say that he considered this the most meaningful award he ever received. To say that Elvis was humbled by being nominated for this honor is an understatement. It represented Elvis' acceptance by his peers and proved that he was seen as more than just a pop culture phenomenon, but an outstanding humanitarian and entertainer as well.

  • As a Jaycee, you have NO IDEA how wonderful it is to see this.

  • WOW Fantastic footage !!!

Elvis "When I was a child, ladies and gentleman, I was a dreamer.I read comic books,

and I was a hero in the movie. So every dream that I ever dreamed has come true

a hundred times.I learned very early in life that without a song, the day would

never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road

    would never bend; without a song.So I keep singing a song.Goodnight, Thank

    You".....

Thank you Elvis for make me dream too....

  • Wow! I've never seen this footage with such great sound & picture quality before.

We can't thank you enough Alan for posting this.

It's one of the most important events of Elvis' life - and he damn sure did deserve it.

Both thumbs up & to my faves

  • As I'm sure most of us have probably seen Elvis' speech, when you see it next to the others and what they have accomplished, it would be humbling. I really understand why Elvis felt so proud of this award. Being honored next to men working on cancer, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner, and heads of large corporations, you can only say...WOW!

  • Thank you very much, this is fantastic !!

  • @bronx10471 I agree with everything you've said. Elvis did so much for charity but rarely asked for recognition unlike other celebrities. This along with the statement he made about Jesus being "THE KING" and him being being just an entertainer showed that he had his feet firmly planted on the ground. That truly makes Elvis "THE KING" of entertainment.

  • I only wish their was more of Elvis, but I really enjoyed it. I have been to Graceland and have seen the award. It says that Elvis took this award pretty much every where he went. He was very proud of it and it reminded him of where he started from. He was a great man and did give away so much. At Graceland you see all the checks he made out to so many charaties every year from the late 50's to the 70's, today most celebrites broadcast what they do, but not Elvis. He was the BEST!

  • @iwmackay Nothings changed......

  • I am sure this is an important historical document but my god, what a load of self-important crap people were full of.

  • I have never seen this, didn't know it existed. You are the master in seeking out these gems of Elvis. Great job, keep up the good work Alan. Thanks for sharing.
