Marv Johnson as I said before recorded "Come To Me" in January 1959 on Tamla label number 101 which was the very first single on Motown, and here is his 1969 track on Gordy label ten years later, a favourite again of mine. Very fond memories of this tune. Let me know if you like it? John

  • I think this tune was released on the Gordy label in March of 1966--

  • Yes, you are quite right it was indeed on Gordy 7051 in March of 1966 and released later in October 1969 in the UK TMG 713. I really loved all Marv's songs, they were so good!! JOHN

  • OMG WHAT A TRACK, I remember meeting Marv and what a Gentleman. He enquired if I was going to further Tamla concerts, introducin me to Pete Sellers, who was the London Tamla Manager at that time, and gave me their phone numbers just tellin me to call if i wanted to go. He introduced me to The Velvettes & when I told him was crazy about Martha Reeves early stuff he introduced me to her, and whilst Martha took me on her tour bus for a girlie chat Marv entertained my young son.Such a GENTLEMAN!

  • I've only just read this nice story, as I've been ill in hospital, but Marv was one of the nicest people in showbusiness, it's a shame he's no longer with us. He was a good friend of Berry Gordy Jr, it was a pity his records weren't promoted more I think.

  • What was on the B side?

  • "Just The Way You Are" if that's of help to you. (I prefer to say Side Two!) :-)

  • Great tune, trip down memory lane, great times and great days. Many thanks

  • Stunning sou music. I got to know Edwin Starr when he moved permanently to the UK in the 1980s and he described Marv Johnson as the soul singer he most admired. Enough said.

  • was priveleged to meet marvin at the rsg triple motown show at queensway hall dunstable all nighter 1987/88 , total class , and in my books my number one all time favourite live act ever , he did'nt just belt out the classics , he took you on a trip down memory lane where it was like you was transported back to the 60s

  • I L;OVE MOTOWN!

  • new to me where have i beennnnnnnnnnnn great tuneee

  • I was privilaged to attend a Marv Johnson gig at the Broken Wheel, Retford in the UK as a very young teenager and then memory will linger 'til I go!

  • By '66 Marv was almost out the door. He must have felt so unappreciated. All around him were these HUGE Motown success stories. I'll go on record (no pun) that without Marv's pioneer songs Gordy may not have come out a big winner. It just seems there should be an everlasting connection between Berry and Marv. Perhaps it's one more example of Berry's ruthless management style.

  • If you look (or better yet hear) the whole discography of Berry Gordy's empire, COME TO ME was really the first money maker within the Motown in-house records. Outside you'd have to start with LONELY TEARDROPS. Anyway, Marv had follow-up hits but Berry didn't push the beat/sound to the Miracles. It was six months til Barrett Strong's MONEY again rang the cash register. It was a full year til Smokey got the groove with WAY OVER THERE.

  • love this track.
