Ford and Facebook engineers got together for a 24-hour "hackathon" to explore ways to socially-enable the car through the in-car connectivity system, Ford SYNC. Using both the SYNC AppLink and Facebook sets of APIs, engineers were able to develop a series of ideas for consideration, such as the car automatically "checking in" on Facebook, or the driver being able to listen to a friend's music stream, or the ability to have the car post driving achievements, such as fuel economy, on the Facebook Wall.

It's great to be inventive, but these beg the question: just because we *can* do something, does it necessarily mean we *should*?

Facebook already has apps for all major smartphone platforms; an app for the car isn't necessary, and opens up the potential for abuse.

I'm sure the reason you're even looking into this due to "potential customer feedback", and/or Chevy offering Facebook functionality as part of the OnStar system, but as a responsible driver, I'm telling you- you don't need it.
