Lavani is a combination of traditional song and dance, which particulary performed to the enchanting beats of 'Dholak', an drum like instrument. This dance is performed by attractive women wearing nine-yard saris. The women gyrate on the pulsating beats of traditional music.

The word Lavani originates from "Lavanya", meaning beauty. Earlier, this art form dealt with different and varied subject matters such as society, religion, politics, romance, etc.
Lavani was used as a form of entertainment and morale booster to the tired soldiers during the 18th and 19th century Maratha battle.

  • Even Bharatanatyam was once used by devadasis, basically they took away the heritage from the devadasis and made it chaste and purely spiritual. Maybe they can do it with lavni too

  • @savita1926 i'm pretty sure there are many good families that send their daughters for learning lavni... its a dance form and it can be as suggestive as u want it to be... same as katthak, it can be used as a mujhra or as an elegant abhinay... u dont need to pass comments if u dont know much about culture... lavni is just as hard to learn as any other classical dance form... its the most extensive in footwork (even more than katthak)...

  • @bina1rani lavni isn't necessarily folk... its more a stylised form of katthak (from the foot work and all)... folk dances can be done by everyday people... dances like lavni are only performed in venues and for audiences...
