Blended families are nothing unusual these days, but in the 1950's they were exceptional. Jane Hamilton's "When Madeline Was Young" is the story of two people who live in the suburbs of Chicago with their two children and the husband's brain-damaged first wife who is, for all intents and purposes, their third child.
Published by Doubleday.
