Ayutthaya city, which was founded around 1350, became the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai. Because of its favorable location between China, India and the Malay Archipelago, it became the trading capital of Asia or even the world. By 1700 Ayutthaya had become the largest city in the world with a population of 1 million. The city was invaded and destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. Its remains, characterized by the prang (reliquary towers) and gigantic monasteries, give an idea of its past splendour. Most of the remains seen today are of temples and palaces, as those were the only buildings that were made of stone in those days. The great cultural value of Ayutthaya's ruins were officially recognized in 1991, when the Historic City became an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ayutthaya is located about 85 kilometers north of Bangkok. Its proximity to Bangkok make it a popular day-trip destination for tourists from Bangkok.

  • @pwalpar Thanks Walter. I love to travel and I am getting less interested in YouTube. I put my camcorder away. It is not worth it for me. I shall write to you sometime.
