CARLSBAD, Calif -- Bing, the new Microsoft search engine debuted here yesterday, is different.

What impressed me most is how Bing creates rich, well organized environments to do research, find entertainment and buy things -- complete with toll free phone numbers. For operators of e-commerce site or entertainment destination sites, particularly those who rely on display advertising, Bing is something to keep an eye on.

So why is Bling different and will it succeed? Hanging out in the press room at D: All Things Digital earlier this week, I has the good fortune to get the perspective of two of industry's most insightful writers, Erick Schonfeld, Co-Editor of TechCrunch and Ina Fried, lead Microsoft beat reporter at CNET News.com.

I spoke with Ina on Tuesday before the launch and Erick yesterday, immediately after the Ballmer presentation.

For more perspective on the Bing and how it creates unique informational environments, check out Esther Dyson's post on the Huffington Post. And Charlene Li weighs in on why she likes Bing for shopping.

That's the point, idiot. If there are no "real" characteristics of a gender, why would one feel so desperately inclined to identify with them, and "be" them? And if that's the case, aren't they saying difference in genders actually matter? But, most transgenders would say that gender differences are constructed and pointless. So either way they are running into hypocrisy and contradictions. Either gender differences matter, don't matter, or don't exist. Can't have all three.

  • @Mansurus what are the characteristics of being female, mr "man"surus

  • Erick was probably disgusted and couldn't stand getting interviewed sitting beside that alien.

  • Gross on so many levels, but thats your choice ian

I have nothing against transgenders, i have everything against transgenders who get angry on the internet, are incredibly nerdy and spiteful of those who don't get them or accept them as normal. Who create clubs on the internet where they patronize each other about how normal they are and throw pity parties about how nobody accepts them and create new jargon and acronyms for themselves. Who share no characteristics of the gender they claim to identify with.

  • I think Ina is mature enough to realise that the internet is full of 13 year olds who find pretty much anything unusual. She's a great journalist and I think that the mere fact that these comments are predominantly focusing on her gender is just pathetic. This is the 21st century. Let's get back on topic please.....

  • @Mansurus Why would you even write this? Haters gon' hate :) - I'm glad you got your stereotypical, bigoted, vent out to your adoring public.

  • WTF.... release the kraken... OMG She/He ????
