Rabaul was the main Japanese base in the South Pacific in WW2.

View of the volcano and Rabaul Harbour from the observatory. The major eruption of the volcano in 1994 destroyed the city (once the 3rd largest in PNG). The part of the city closest to the volcano has never been rebuilt, but was well developed before the volcano and home to the airport. There was a minor eruption the day after we left.

Some neat pictures of action in WW2 can be found at http://www.kalaniosullivan.com/8thAttackSqdnAssoc.tripod.com/WWIIa.html#Campaign

  • will you be able to send me some of the music?

  • The clip in this video is the longest and best clip I have. By the time I figured out how to do an audio recording on my camera, the singing was almost over!

  • Where did you get the music from?

  • I recorded the music in a church service I attended in Rabaul....just used the audio feature on my digital camera. The harmonies you hear in the music in the islands (Bougainville too) are incredible!

  • This video looks to me like it was taken from the haus guria up on the north daughter off tunnel hill road. Rabaul was re-built after the 1936 eruption but I doubt that it will ever be rebuilt again. Perhaps the wharves will be brought back into use, but that's about all. Pity because to me it was the most beautiful town in all of PNG, especially from the vantage point at haus guria. Bel bilong me he kraiaut long dispela hap nau he go pinis.

  • wish it was longer! brought tears to my eyes. anywayz will be there 2011, just can;t wait!

  • I lived there for 12 years as a kid. Left in1982 for highschool in Sydney. I was last there in 1988, but parents stayed there for a while running a shop. Left for good after the most recent seriies of eruptions
