A video i made for a friend of mine.
He made a cover of Roy Orbison's 'Crying' and asked me to make a video for it.
My idea was to just let him sit in front of the camera and cry. This way both the music and the video would be a cover (or remake, as you call it for video's). Of course the remake is of Bas-Jan Ader's 'I'm too sad to tell you'.
So i gave him a camera and a lamp and after a few weeks he handed in a tape with him just crying in front of the camera. However, the quality of the tape was really bad, so he had to do it again.
As it is quite hard to cry on command and when you are actually crying, you don't really feel like taping yrself, it then took a few months before he gave me back the tape and said: 'i can't do it'.
So i put away the tape and gave up, but when i found it again i decided to watch it anyway, see what he had been taping.
First a lot of images of rain on an empty street and then himself for 1 hour, just staring and looking sad. With only two moments of actual, genuine, crying. Which i could use for the chorusses, so i made the video with the materials i had.
When it was finished, he liked it, but still had to think about whether he would like to have himself shown on the internet like that. So after another half year of me sometimes asking if it was oké to put it on youtube and him eventually asking if it could be in black and white, here it is.
I hope you like it.
