I wrote this song on the porch of a cabin up in the Smoky Mountains shortly after the remnants of Hurricane Lee made it's way through the area. Record rainfall and the place was beautiful!

I built the Hoelle Harp Guitar in a small shop in the basement of my home. It's based on the Sullivan-Elliott instrument commisioned by John Doan in the 80's. It has 20 strings configured in 3 banks... 6 sub bass harp strings, 6 regular (fretted) guitar strings and 8 super-treble harp strings. It took about 10 months to complete and was finally finished and strung up in December 2011. This video was shot about a week later.

I hope you enjoy it!

  • Very Nice! I saw your build site

  • Awesome sounding piece...this looks like a Sullivan Elliot replica...where can I get one?

  • Isn't it amazing that the aftermath of a devastating storm is so conducive to a calming song?

  • Lovely song Tom...and i'm sure only shades of many to come. I thought the instrument was really special...and then i read that you actually built it! That probably makes the playing part seem easy! Great job on all counts. Congrats!!

  • Nice job on the ax AND the tune!

  • Wonderful playing & great sounding harp guitar!

  • Nicely done! Given the title and the fact that you're in the South, I love the possible double-meaning/connection to Robert E., whether intentional or not.

  • Harp Guitar......I looked at it for the first time now.

!!! GREAT PLAYING MY FRIEND!! THANX!!!

  • Bravo on both counts - music and instrument!

  • Great, wonderful music and a very cool instrument.
