You've probably heard the old adage that "they don't build 'em like they
used to!" Thank goodness. You know how we always think about what big huge tanks the old cars of the 50's and 60's were for size? And how we talk about how there is so much plastic on the new cars that if one of the old tanks ever collided with a new car, the new car would be demolished? Well, someone in the insurance industry put that theory to the test!

  • That poor 59..

  • And still I would rather own the 59 Bel Air. Don't care if it kills me...

  • Fraudulent...

  • @demariojason yes but were they made by the same auto maker?

  • @samthelegoman1

He, he, love those Imperials 57-66. They were indeed sturdy cars! (Got a -55 myself).

In a real world crash it would probably come out a lot better than the Bel Air, but still the modern car driver is more likelyto be the surviver.....

Seat belts and airbags do make a difference!

The whole body structure of modern cars makes it less likely to get seriousally hurt in an accident, not to mention all the sharp and hard objects in the interior of old cars.

    Drive safely:-)

  • @samthelegoman1 Hi and thanks. I never knew that Imperials were built that battleship tough with that much iron because they came off the line like a lightning bolt. As a teenager I drove a 58 square bird but my poor old 352 wasn't even in the frame if a 413 Wedge pulled up alongside.

  • These people are full of shit!!! You talk about crumple zones and etc but it's because of the older cars that 1.) lasted linger than this Reynolds Wrap people drive and 2.) it's been PLENTY of times where I've seen older cars pierce through these newer vehicles.

  • @artvlive You're an asshole for posting this faked test. Bunch of shit was stripped off the 59, making it easier for the 09 to go right through the half empty shell left over. You suck donkey balls, dirty hairy urine soaked donkey balls.

  • @Satsc2 Moron, they stripped a bunch of parts off the older car before crashing it, making it easier for the other car to go through it. I bet it doesn't even have an engine. lol

  • How bout next time using a 1960 Imperial? Those things were so well built they got banned from all nationwide demolition derbies. Try putting a 09 chevy malibu in one of those :P

  • This iihs.org/50th/default.html says it was a 40MPH test. That would be 80 MPH closing speed. Ramp it up to 65 MPH each and see what happens to the 2009 Chevy. I'd sacrifice another 4-door 59 Chevy for that.

  • What was the impact speed? These tests where they ram one car offset into a stationary crumple block are usually 35 to 40 MPH. This looks like they hit at 65 MPH = 130 MPH closing speed. That's what would happen on a two lane road if one car suddenly swerved to hit another.
