should we be concerned that in the Espace, there were flames when the airbag deployed?

The "Flames" seen in the Espace airbag aren't unusual. In order for any airbag to deploy, a small charge (aka explosive) is detonated. The flames/light we see are simply the explosion that initially deploys the airbag. You can see it in other Fifth Gear & Top Gear videos when they slow crashes down. An example of this is Fifth Gear's "5 Star Car vs. Tree".

Do the same test with a Discovery Series 2 landmark from 2004 or a series 3 from the same year you would get exactly the same result. The Disco 3 only has a 4 star safety rating. But the Esapce, which is 3 years older in design, has a top 5 star rating. Renault know abit about safety, with all their cars having a 5 star rating. So I know which car I'd chose.

true the espace is a really good safe car to travel in and comfortable but it wasn't really a fair test that discovery is a discovery series I so its pretty primative by todays standard unlike that espace wich is more recent with more safety features because when that discovery was built land rover didn't have the school run in mind. But if you did the same test with either a Discovery Series 2 landmark from 2004 or a series 3 from the same year you would get a very different result.bye espace

why do you need a 4x4 to get your kids to school? take the bus or buy a van. i really dont see the point in having big 4x4's as people movers.
they are designed for the country and in the country and on a farm, most crashes are single vehicle. a 4x4 with a rollbar and bullbar is the safest car to be in when flipped and rolled. 4x4's and their accessories are designed to protect the passengers.
id like to see what would happen if they fitted that Discovery with a bullbar, as most 4x4's have.
