Hinsdale Fire Chief Mike Kelly says the fire was probably caused by a CFL bulb on a dimmer. Most CFL's are not supposed to be used on a dimmer.

How do you know which ones? Check the box -- if you can read the fine print.

"We had to enlarge the information on the packaging so we could read it clearly," Kelly said.

Does the average person takes the time to read that small print?

"I would say no," the chief said.

Underwriters Laboratory has tested CFL bulbs. An engineer said fires are rare, but the potential exists if you use the wrong bulb in a dimmer.

Tess' Dad, Jeff Ellithorpe, says he searched the Internet and was surprised by the lack of information on mixing CFL's and dimmers.

  • @MrSevenpillars if u had them upside down u burned the ballest and its not arking it the starter filament in the cfl

  • @BenHutchinson321 ok if u dimmed a computor it will possibly burn just like cfl but get a ccfl they work better

  • @patricknedz yes but make shure its on full power

  • @n00kkin you bought the cheep

  • @02585975 you possibly got a dimmble

  • You might think it will be OK if you leave the dimmer on high all the time and it will be fine. BUT this may not be the case, TRIAC dimmers will destroy NON-compliant (dimmable) CFLs or LEDs.

CFLs contain mercury, a potent toxin ,Dispose of properly

  • all cfl's sold in u.s.a are made and shipped from china and only china.. NO WHERE ELSE in the world.

  • I have c CFL on a Dimmer and it works just fine!!

  • We had a CFL that started arcing and making the house smell -- so much for "eco-friendliness." No dimmer. I don't remember the brand.

  • no idea it was a bad idea, I had done this for halloween using a colored CFL, the dimmer switch caused it to have a flashing/flickering effect. never again after this story. is it safe to sue in a dimmer if the dimmer setting is on full brightness?
