Thanks, I am here in southern california and the seasons have run late this year. My back yard was never professionaly done, so we just have the natural dirt and the dirt is very hard now. From what I learned last night from a little video and reading is I should puncture the ground then throw mulch or topsoil? Tell my lawn guy if he can trim it less so the grass will be like 2 inches high instead of 1 inch high.

@Bladerunner55217 Yes, but a bare spot that size can take a full season to recover, depending on the quantity of sunlight and other factors. Ensure that you use high quality topsoil free from wood. Fertilize the bare spot and its immediate surrounding area. Lastly, don't expect much progress this year. Most growth occurs during the summer.

@TomZentra thanks, I was wondering the same thing that mega was saying. My bare spot is about 6 feet long by 4 feet wide. Will my existing grass still be able to creep back in on a big bald spot such as that? Thanks again for your time.

@MegaTmarshall That won't give you the same result. You'll have a different species of grass mixed in the patch. It's better to repair the lawn as in the video and then have your existing grass creep back into the bare spot.

The same result can be accomplished with a garden weasel & Scotts EZ Seed 3 part mixture that can be purchased at your local garden centre. Just water in the EZ Seed mixture, after you use the weasel (to loosen up the soil), sit back and have a beer and watch your new grass grow after about one week - 10 days. It's as simple as that!
