  • Just to follow up, assuming the SP6 COULD play 105dB-SPL, at it's farthest usable distance of 15 meters, with 3 dB of amplifier headroom, you would need 1,787 Watts. I could power it with 3,566 Watts, but that would give me 6dB or amplifier headroom, not necessarily more SPL or better sound. In fact, I would say that the more powerful amps are not going to sound as good. It depends on the topology of course.

  • @KayGee9345 You get better performance by bi-amping or tri-amping, eliminating the passive crossover from the circuit, not just by having more power. The correct amount of power to use is based on a mathematic equation, factoring speaker efficiency @ 1W/1m, distance from the speaker to the listener, desired SPL at that distance, then the amount of headroom desired. Go to the Crown Audio website and look for the system design calculators. Most people don't know about amp sensitivity and gain.

  • i love those speakers, dam i want to get a pair.

  • There is one guy who posted here he ran 4 pv215's on a 4080hz... that would be a 2 ohm load per channel loading the hell out of the amplifiers min 4 ohm rating. Yes it can get hot, and yes it can blow the amplifier's soft-power on ballast resistor (common problem on 4080hz's)

  • @KayGee9345 You hit the nail right on the head my friend. Headroom is key to not clipping your speakers and causing permanent damage.

  • @SeaBeeLeee yeah that should do it. You will get a better response out of your speakers if you have an amp that is more powerful than the speakers. this gives you some headroom so that you can get the full power out of your speakers without putting a strain on the amp. when you turn the power amp up to max it sends a nasty electrical current to the speakers which can blow them. so you want it to be more powerful than the speakers so you can just turn the amp up just over halfway.

  • QUESTION: So PROGRAM power rating is what you SHOULD have? I have a 250w rms speaker, but it also states 500w programed ... I need a 500w rms amp?.....idk go figure

  • Used the Peavey CS4080, We powered 2 15" 8ohms speakers per channel during a roadshow. It was running very hot and suddenly it exploded. Yes. sparks flew and the venue power was tripped. Now, whenever its turn on, the while power will trip. I guess its gone for me.... It worked for about half a year. Oh well.... (They are beast when they still worked!!!)
