What is the Genuine Progress Index (GPI)?

The GPI is a holistic measurement tool that government and communities can use to account for the real costs and benefits of economic activity. It counts beneficial activities as positive, and harmful activities as negative, and it provides a systematic way to integrate economic issues with environmental and social concerns.

Why is the GPI important to Nova Scotians?

•Using the GPI will enable us to make better decisions now and for the future. Properly valuing economic, social, environmental, human, and cultural assets means decisions will be made with our wellbeing in mind and in a way that leaves a better world for our children and grandchildren.

•Using the GPI puts a value on things we say are most important, such as health, education, a clean environment, decent living standards, economic security, spending time with our family, feeling connected to our community, and our overall quality of life. The GPI also reports on how income is distributed and counts and puts a value on reducing the gap between rich and poor.

•The GPI also measures the real costs of pollution, environmental degradation, crime, sickness, and risk factors like smoking, obesity, and physical activity—costs that are hidden in our conventional economic accounts.

•The GPI is fully aligned with existing Nova Scotian government priorities and key policy documents, such as Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity (an economic development strategy), Weaving the Threads (a social policy framework) and the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act (2007).

  • Did not realise how crazy the use of GDP is to measure progress till watching this video. The sooner more politicians, economists and business owners come to agreement on using a tool like GPI to measure progress the better for us all.

Lets share this to as many people as we can so that more people realise how misleading GDP is when used as it being used.

  • haha I'm Native american (Indigenous) and the instant I heard about this in my environmental science class I completely agreed with it, this and the HDI.

  • @MrRobinMurphy GPI. the volume button is next to the play button.

  • This guy is right. The GDP doesn't take into account, or doesn't deduct, the depletion of resources. and environmental damage due to that production of goods, it also doesn't see a difference in quality between goods either.

  • Everyone need to vote, favorite, comment on and share this video right now.

  • It would be great to have this terrific video in a less choppy version. It's very distracting to show to students in its current form! They have a hard time getting past the poor quality video.

  • this is so true. We are part of the planet... and we live hier as guests and not as masters... therefore we should have respect for nature... Living in this planet could be so much easier, but we have made it complex and difficult, and we are destroying our inheritage, our home.... and because of wrong concepts... let's welcome the GPI

  • I agree with MerrinPearse... our view that growth is going to solve all of our problems in this country has brought us nothing. Even if you're a climate change denier... you can't deny that our rivers and oceans are polluted, our drinking water tainted, our food chain is filled with toxic chemicals. We're now a nation that is riddled with cancer, diabetes and other diseases as a result. We need to get our priorities straight. The GPI sounds like a great tool to get on track.
