My dad brought one of these home. The exact same one but it missing the stack and all of the red. Hes trying to work it right now as you red this comment. It is very cool and loud and hot.

My father has one of these. It collects dust now because we can never find a heating element that will last. Any suggestions?

Great engine, in great shape! I had my grandfather's of the same model. As an engineer-to-be, it was the only thing he wanted for his twelfth Christmas - and it was all he received. Several years ago I sent it to a guy in Massachusetts to have some work done to it. He came highly recommended by several other toy steam collectors. However, the guy decided to steal it. I've never seen it again and he's nothing but BS on the rare occasion he can be reached by phone.

...I also learned how painful a steam burn was as a kid!

Beautiful! I have the same model from my dad, and it's in similar nice condition. It's stored in a glass display case in my living room.

Do empires have reverse?
Also, the reverse on most steam engines is stephenson linkage, and it can only be used on double acting engines, and i think early empires are only single acting engines, anyway empire engines are very cool nevertheless

You are correct. The Empires are very simple single acting engines. No reverse...just full speed, one way!!!

No reverse on most Empires...a select few do I believe, but none of the cast iron type I collect.
